SMD¡¯s Monthly AMOLED Shipment Exceeds 2 Million Units 2009.08.14

Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) said Tuesday that its monthly shipment of AMOLED panels exceeded two million units (equivalent to four million units for a 2-inch panel) in July. The achievement was made only four months after the company posted one million units in monthly shipment of AMOLED panels in the past April.

The large volume of shipment is attributed to the rapidly increasing adoption of AMOLED panels as mobile phone display. Samsung Electronics sees sales of its new mobile phone ¡®Haptic AMOLED¡¯ reach over 200,000 units only one month after the mobile phone was released.

An increased demand for AMOLED has led to the rise in supply for the new panel.

An official from SMD said, ¡°The share of premium products with over 3-inch screen in shipment grew to 65 percent in July, showing a significant rise from 20 percent in April. In particular, the demand for AMOLED panels to be used for Samsung Electronics¡¯ mobile phone has increase more than ten times.¡±

SMD predicted that the share of AMOLED panels to be used for mobile phones will increase from 2.3 percent this year to 40 percent in 2015, for digital cameras from 0.6 percent to 17 percent and for game gadgets from 0 percent to 25 percent during the same period.
