The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in Korea, which is actively developing OLED lighting, displayed 13 pieces of OLED lighting with good design at ¡°the 9th International Meeting on Information Display (IMID 2009)¡± which was held on October 13-16 at the KINTEX in Ilsan near Seoul. The works on display were the winning designs of ¡°the 1st OLED lighting design contest.¡°

The OLED lighting design contest was held under the theme of 'BEYOND THE SUN,' and was sponsored by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE), the Korea Display Industry Association (KDIA), the Korean Information Display Society (KIDS), the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI), Feelux, and SMD. The grand prize winning design was ¡®OLED MOBILE¡¯ which depicted the rising sun. The design was chosen for grand-prize unanimously by all judges who said that it matched the theme of the contest and demonstrated the advantages of OLED well.

This lighting can be folded like the blinds. It is gradually unfolded when the switch is on. It used the OLED panel for lighting which was co-developed by SMD. The panel lasts for more than 20,000 hours and is as bright as fluorescent lamps with consuming less than half the power spent by fluorescent lamps.
At the IMID 2009, the ETRI also showcased 3 pieces of OLED lighting which used lighting panels it developed and were designed by INNODESIGN, a world-famous Korean design company.
1. RAYER
¡®RAYER¡¯ is a design for lighting on the ceiling and it used 180x180mm panels put together in a lattice form, taking advantage of OLED that allows the production of thin panels. It is expected to be introduced in the market when OLED lighting is mass produced.
2. GAMBLER
¡®GAMBLER¡¯ is a design for desk lamps, and thin OLED panels used in the design allow the degree of the wings of the lamps to be adjusted. It can be folded downward so that it takes up small space. It was named ¡°GAMBLER¡± because its feature of being bendable reminds of cards played by gamblers. The OLED desk lamp consists of four 150x50mm panels and emits much less heat than LED desk lamps do.
3. TAEGUK
OLED lighting ¡®TAEGUK¡¯ is one of the TAEGUK series generated by Korean designer Kim Young-se, CEO of INNODESIGN. TAEGUK is the symbol of the Korean national flag and the designer Kim adapted the beautiful curve and straight lines of TAEGUK and four trigrams (¡®gwae¡¯ in Korean which is also a symbol of the Korean flag) into a design of daily life. The work costs around 5-6 million won, and the panel lasts for 100,000 hours with 500cd/A.
The ETRI is co-developing design and brands of OLED lighting with INNODESIGN and plans to provide solutions to companies interested in advancing into the field.
