Is accelerating the localization for FMM, which can realize ultra-high resolution?

Since Fine Metal Mask (FMM) plays a role of depositing pixel and RGB organic materials, FMM is a factor that determines the resolution and yield of OLED. However, FMM is currently confronted with some limitations that thermal expansion occurs during the deposition process or shadow effects arise due to its weight.

In addition, the total amount of FMM is imported at high prices in the form of finished products which are made by Japanese Dainippon Printing (DNP)’ etching process with the rolled invar produced by Hitachi Metals.

Under the circumstances, domestic and overseas related industries are concentrating on developing FMM in various ways such as laser processing, but they are still in R & D stage.

The research team of Professor Park Yong-Bum of New Material Engineering Department of Sunchon University announced on 9th May that it succeeded in developing the technology of electroforming invar manufacturing technology. This is a technique for separating the metal attached to the cathode while utilizing the electroplating, and making FMM.

<Thermal expansion curves and microstructure of electroforming invar, source: Suncheon University>

According to the research team, invar can be produced as a sheet material, and the shape of the patterned cathode can be copied as it is, through this technology. In addition, the thickness of FMM can be reduced to about 7μm, about half the thickness of the current FMM, which might be helpful to realize super high image quality.

Professor Park said, “The level of Japanese research on the electroforming invar has been pursued to the bottom of our research team, and China has entered into development with a large amount of capital.” In order for Korean companies to gain international competitiveness, I thought the academic circles needed to support it actively. Consequently, I have decided to publish all the databases that have been built and researched for nearly 20 years through papers.”

Attention is focused whether it is to be successful in localizing FMM, the total amount of which has been imported.

<Finetech Japan 2013에서 공개 된 Canon tokki의 Gen6 vertical type evaporator>

Is there possibility of High resolution(UHD) OLED Smart-phone generation?

Recently VR contents experience through smart-phone device has been increased, therefore high resolution of smart phone is becoming necessary. However, OLED smart-phone resolution still remains at QHD level for 3 years since QHD OLED is applied to Galaxy Note 4 for the first time in 2014.

The core point that decides resolution of OLED smart-phone is evaporation process for emission layer. Bottom-up type evaporation method, which is applied to the recent devices is that substrate and FMM (fine metal mask) are horizontally arranged on the upper side of evaporator and vaporize the organic material from the lower linear source in order to form RGB layer.

Thin FMM measures less than 15um thick is necessary for making high resolution OLED like UHD level, however, as FMM gets thinner, it would be difficult to make mass production because technical problems will be occurred such as patterning, sealing and welding.

In order to solve these problems, various metal mask patterning technologies are being developed such as vertical type evaporation and plane source evaporation.

Vertical type evaporator that arranges board and FMM vertical is developed by Hitachi of Japan for the first time. And Canon Tokki exhibited Gen6 vertical type evaporator at Finetech Japan 2013, however it is not being used for mass production at the moment.

<Canon Tokki’s Gen6 vertical type evaporator which is exhibited at Finetech Japan 2013>

According to the recent ETNEWS, Applied Materials developed Gen6 flexible OLED vertical type evaporator and it is being tested in Japan Display.

Plane source evaporator is being tested but also the linear source type. Plane source evaporator method is that an organic material is first evaporated on the metal surface to produce plane source, then re-evaporated in order to form an organic thin film on the substrate.

In the past iMiD 2017, representative of OLEDON, Chang Hoon Hwang mentioned that 2250 ppi resolution OLED can be implemented through plane source evaporator.

For metal mask patterning technology, electro forming and laser patterning technology is highlighted. Electro forming method is developed by Wave Electronics, TGO Technology, Athene and so on. Laser patterning technology is being developed by AP Systems.

As such, development for high resolution OLED is receiving great attention whether it can solve the current problems and contribute to UHD resolution implementation for OLED smart-phone.

JDI announces restructuring plan including 30% labor reduction and OLED business transformation

Japanese display panel maker JDI (Japan display) announced a restructuring proposal on July 9 that includes the reduction manpower about 3,700 jobs in 30% of group employees and securing external fund. According to the Nippon Keizai and Yomiuri newspapers report, JDI will reduce about 3,500 people, mainly assembly plants in China and the Philippines and about 200 people from their own country as well as decided to suspend operation of Nomi factory this year which LCD production plant located in Ishikawa. It is said, Nomi plant will be used as an OLED production base.

JDI, which was launched in 2012 through the integration of Hitachi, Toshiba and Sony’s liquid crystal business, is reportedly suffering from deteriorating performance due to business depression of LCD and OLED business transition in recent years. So, the company carried out structural reforms for the first time in five years and the LCD panel production line will be reviewed to cover a loss of 150 billion yen in the fiscal year ending March 2018, foreign sources said.

In addition, it is reported that JDI will receive a loan of 110 billion yen from the main bank, which is guaranteed by the Industrial Development Organization, the largest shareholder and private-equity fund of JDI. Three major banks, including Mizuho Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Group and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust, are planning to support new granting of credit, the Nihon Keizai newspaper reported.

Accordingly, JDI’s conversion of OLED business is expected to accelerate. “There is no future without OLED,” said Higashii Riki, chairman of JDI. “We will increase the cost of R & D in this sector.”

JDI highlighted the advantages such as brightness and contrast ration of OLED which has exhibited 5.2 inch FHD flexible OLED with RGB structure at SID 2016 and FULL ACTIVE ™ FLEX OLED with 5.5 inch FHD and LCD were compared at SID 2017.
